generated, the smoke alarm is not activated properly and should not be

Test
After activation, it is good practice to test the alarm. Wait several
minutes then test the unit to ensure proper operation by pressing and
holding in the test button for several seconds. This will trigger the alarm
if the electronic circuitry, horn and battery are working properly. If no
alarm sounds, the unit may have a defective battery or other failure.
Refer to
Troubleshooting
section for a solution.
DO NOT
use an open flame to test your alarm. This is not a reliable
test and you could damage the alarm or ignite combustible materials
and start a fire.
CAUTION:
Due to the sound volume (85 decibels) of the alarm, always
stand an arms length away from the unit when testing. This alarm
model has a soft-start alarm - the first 6 beeps are at reduced noise
level for user comfort.
NOTE: WEEKLY TEST IS RECOMMENDED.
Silence Mode (Hush Mode)
The Hush Mode has the capability of temporarily silencing the alarm for
about 10 minutes. This feature is to be used to minimize nuisance
alarms only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from
cooking activates the alarm.
Press the Hush button for at least 5 seconds to silence the alarm. The
alarm will enter into Silence Mode for approximately 10 minutes.
