IFU 98-9098B– AmeriClean Powder Membrane Cleaning Procedure
Important! Read and Understand All Instructions and Review Your MSDS Before Cleaning
WARNING:
Proper safety equipment should be utilized. Such equipment includes chemical
resistant gloves, boots, apron, safety goggles, splash shield, and upper/lower-
body protection. The chemicals are high pH and low pH membrane cleaners
and may cause severe chemical burns!
Never allow AmeriClean A and AmeriClean B to mix!
AmeriClean A and B membrane cleaners are intended for polyamide thin-film membranes only and
cannot be used on cellulose acetate membranes!
The objective of the membrane cleaning procedure is to pump the high pH and low pH membrane
cleaners through the RO system at low pressure and high velocity. This action removes scale and
organic contaminants from the RO membrane(s) to improve system performance.
Begin Cleaning
First, apply AmeriClean B Powder for the removal of biological and colloidal foulants. This cleaner is
mixed at the ratio of 1 lb. (372 ml) of powder cleaner per 10 gallons of clean water
(softened or RO)
.
Agitate the solution until the powder dissolves completely. Be sure to take into account the number
of gallons in the membranes and piping.
Once the AmeriClean B has been mixed, recirculate the cleaning solution through the vessels. In
general, it is a good idea to minimize the amount of permeation that occurs in the system during the
recirculation and rinsing steps. However, do not completely stop the permeate as doing so may
result in a backpressure on the membrane which can cause delamination. Recirculation should
approximate 35 gpm and 60 psi per vessel, though every system is a little different. Heating the
water may help in removing foulants but it is important to keep the temperature within the
membrane manufacturer's temperature parameters so glue lines do not melt. After recirculating the
AmeriClean B mixture for a minimum of 50 minutes. Heavily fouled membranes require soaking the
membranes for between 2 hours and 24 hours. The longer the soak time, the greater the contact
time for the cleaner and the more successful the cleaning will be.
IMPORTANT:
AmeriClean B is a high pH cleaner for polyamide thin-film membranes only and cannot be
used on cellulose acetate membranes. AmeriClean
membrane cleaners are designed to clean
effectively without the problem of excessive foaming.
After the soak is completed, begin a second recirculation of the cleaning solution for approximately
30 minutes. After the recirculation is done, rinsing may begin. During the rinse, use a TDS meter to
measure the concentrate. Rinse continuously until the TDS of the concentrate is roughly equivalent
to that of the incoming rinse water.
