TEST #6b: Shifter Motor/Brake
SHIFTER THEORY OF OPERATION:
When initiating the Spin cycle, voltage is applied to the shifter
motor, causing the actuator to pull the brake lever away from
the spin gear that allows both the impeller and basket to move
(spin) simultaneously. The brake linings are working normally if
the basket stops within 10 seconds under no load.
This test checks the shifter motor, motor resistance, wiring,
and brake components.
NOTE:
Refer to Figure 1, “Shifter Motor Strip Circuit” below for
tests and measurements.
IMPORTANT:
The tub must be empty of clothes and water
before running this test.
1. Check the shifter motor and electrical connections by
performing the Spin Test under the “Manual Test Mode”
on page 2-3. The following steps assume that this step
was unsuccessful.
2. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
3. Access the motor components and rotate the large pulley
on the gearcase CCW. Do both the impeller and basket
assembly move together?

No, only the impeller moves. Continue to step 4.
¾
Yes, both the impeller and basket move. Replace the
gearcase assembly.
4. Access the UI/Control Board.
5. Visually check that the CN4 connector is inserted all the
way into the main control
¾
If visual checks pass, go to step 6.
¾
If connector is not inserted properly, reconnect CN4
and repeat step 1.
6. Set voltmeter to AC and connect black probe to CN1-3 (N)
and red probe to CN4-1.
7. Plug in washer or reconnect power. Perform the Spin Test
under the “Manual Test Mode” on page 2-3.

If 120 VAC is cycling ON during SPIN, go to step 8.
¾
If 120 VAC is not present, go to Test #1: UI/Control
Board, page 3-4.
8. Unplug washer or disconnect power. Remove connectors
CN1 and CN4 from the main control. With an ohmmeter,
check resistance of shifter motor across the following CN1
and CN4 connector pinouts:

If values are open or out of range, go to step 9.
¾
If values are correct, go to step 13.
9. Remove back panel to access drive system and connector
bundle.
10. Locate the 2-wire “red” shifter connector. Visually check
the connector and electrical connections to the shifter.
¾
If visual check passes, go to step 11.
¾
If connections are loose, reconnect the electrical
connections and repeat step 1.
11. Disconnect the “red” 2-wire shifter connector. With an
ohmmeter, check resistance of shifter motor, from the
shifter connector at the following connector pinouts.

If values are open or out of range, replace shifter.
¾
If values are correct, go to step 12.
12. With an ohmmeter, check the harness for continuity
between the Control Board and “red” shifter motor
connector at the connector bundle.
¾
If there is continuity, go to step 13.
¾
If there is no continuity, replace the harness between
