10BaseT/100BaseTX Ports
The switch has twenty four auto-negotiating 10/100Base-TX ports with RJ-45
connectors. The ports can automatically sense the speed and duplex mode of
connected devices and can set themselves to 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps and half- or
full-duplex operation. The ports, configured as MDI-X, can be connected to
workstations, printers, and servers with straight through Category 5 or better
cables. If you are connecting to an Ethernet hub or another switch, then a
crossover cable is required.
Port 24 and the Uplink Button
Port 24 has a uplink button that you can use to configure the port as either
MDI or MDI-X. The port and button simplify the task of cascading the switch
to another hub or switch by eliminating the need for a crossover cable. When
the button is in the default OUT position (MDI-X), you can connect port 24
directly to a workstation or server using a straight through Category 5 cable,
just as with ports 1 through 23. If the button is in the IN position (MDI), you
can connect Port 24 to a hub or another switch again using a straight through
Category 5 twisted pair cable. No crossover cable is required.
