Starter System Testing
Condition: Starter motor fails to turn engine. NOTE: Make sure engine crankshaft is free to turn before proceeding with
dynamictesting of starter system. A digital multitester must be used for this test.
Locate the starter relay see “ starter
relay” earlier in this chapter for
location reference.
Disconnect the wires connecter at
the starter motor. Set volt meter to
read dc voltage and connect meter
leads between the black and red/
white wires. Turn the key switch to
“on” position. Pull in the brake lever
and press the starter motor button. Is
battery voltage present?
YES
Disassemble starter motor and
repair or replace as required.
NO
At the relay connect, connect one
meter lead to the red wire and the
other to engine ground. Is battery
voltage present?
NO
Inspect battery voltage and check to
see that the red wire is properly
connected to the battery post.
YES
At relay connector, connect one
meter lead to the green/ yellow wire
and the other to engine ground. Turn
the key switch to the “on” position
and pull in the brake lever. Is battery
voltage present?
NO
Inspect brake switch operation and
test the brown wire at the brake
switches for battery voltage. Is
battery voltage present?
YES
Replace the brake switch
causing the problem.
NO
YES
Check for key-on power on the
brown wire at the key switch.
Replace the starter
relay.
