4.1  LUBRICATION

4.1.1

Winch  The winch gear housing, as received from

Holophane is lubricated and sealed.  Additional lubrica-
tion is not required.

4.1.2

Aircraft Cable  The winch cable and hoisting

cables come from the manufacturer with a very light
coating of lubricant.  This lubricant is desirable and
should not be removed.  The winch cable should be
checked for wear and corrosion and cleaned with a soft
absorbent cloth and lubricated with a good quality acid
free grease on a regular service interval.  In normal
atmospheres the cable should be serviced every two
(2) years.  If during inspection it is found that there are
more than 12 broken wires in one lay of cord, the winch
or, hoisting cables, replace with a new set of cables
available from Holophane.

4.2  REPLACING THE WINCH CABLE

4.2.1

With the mounting ring latched, disconnect the

winch cable from the clevis.

4.2.2

Unwind the old winch cable, note the attachment

to the winch before disconnecting the cable and then
discard the cable.

4.2.3

Attach the new cable obtained from Holophane,

in the same manner that the old cable was attached.

4.2.4

While rewinding the winch, wrap as tightly and

neatly as possible to avoid crushing of the cable when
the load is applied to the winch cable.

4.3  DRIVE MOTOR SHAFT REPLACEMENT

WARNING

Do not attempt to adjust the torque limiting clutch or
replace the shear pin. If repairs are necessary, replace
damaged equipment with new equipment from
Holophane. Failure to follow these warnings may result
in injury or death.

If the torque limiter or shear pin need adjustment or
repair, return the complete motor/torque limiter assem-
bly, as shown in Figure 7, to Holophane for authorized
factory repair or replacement.  It is not necessary to
return the winch.  The motor/torque limiter assembly
may be removed from the winch as described in
paragraphs 2.3.4 through 2.3.6.

4.4  POWER CORD REPLACEMENT

4.4.1

Remove the handhole cover.  Turn the circuit

breaker off.  Disconnect the plug and connector.

4.4.2

Remove power cord plug and the cord clamp that

is positioned just under the clevis.

4.4.3

Strip 18 in. of the outer jacket off the end of the

power cord.  Be sure the power cord stays in the center
of the clevis assembly.

4.4.4

Strip 18 in. of the outer jacket off the end of the

new replacement cord.  If either or both power cords
have more than three conductors, cut the extras off as
they are not needed.

4.4.5

Braid the two cords together end-to-end (approx.

18”).  Keep the braid tight and the diameter as small as
possible.

4.4.6

Attach small gauge wire ties approximately 2

inches apart the whole length of the braid.

4.4.7

Cut off the excess conductor ends used in

braiding and wrap the complete connection with tape.
Check to see that the splice will pass freely through the
hole in the clevis. If not, rework the splice until it will.

4.4.8

Install the cord grip, rubber boot (if used) and

plug to the other end of the replacement cord.  (See
Figure 19).

4.4.9

Connect the circuit breaker cord to the drive

motor or to the transformer as required.  Turn on the
circuit breaker.  Unlatch and lower the ring.  Be sure the
new power cord feeds properly into handhole as the
ring is lowered.

4.4.10

Tie a light rope to the new power cord near the

plug.

4.4.11

Pull on the old power cord, pulling the new cord

over the pulleys and down the outside of the pole.  As
the power cord is pulled, keep tension on the rope
since the cord will begin to move due to its own weight.

4.4.12

The new power cord may not come all the way

down to the ring.  If this happens, raise the ring approxi-
mately 10 ft. while keeping tension on the old cord.
Then lower the ring and the cord will come down with it.
