Quick Start
Windows-based remote control software, such as
VNCSERVER
, to operate the PC over
the network.
SRIsim
looks like a real robot to the ARIA client, so you can operate the demo as you do
your own
Activ
Media robot. SRIsim includes simulated worlds and different robot profiles
which you select from the
Files
menu, too, so you can see how different robots might
navigate in a real or imagined space.
ARIA S
PEECH
D
EMONSTRATION
The
ARIA Speech Recognition and Synthesis Package
comes with two, text-based
demonstration programs, which will allow you to test your Performance PeopleBot’s
ability to respond to and obey voice commands.
speechSimple
The
speechSimple
demonstration program is a tool which allows you to issue voice
commands to your Performance PeopleBot and monitor its acknowledgement of those
commands. Find the demo in
/usr/local/Aria/ArSpeech/examples/
.
Once the
speechSimple
demonstration program has connected to the robot, give the
robot a voice command. Your robot comes from the factory able to recognize certain
words and commands. Find lists of default dictionary terms and commands that the
robot recognizes in the same folder or directory as the demonstration program.
Speak slowly and clearly toward the microphone located at the back of the robot’s top
deck. While you are speaking, the demonstration program console should print that the
robot is
Listening...
to your voice. If the robot recognizes what you have said, it will
tell you what it heard and corresponding text will appear in the
speechSimple
demonstration program console.
When you are finished working with the
speechSimple
demo, press
esc
to exit.
goPing
The
goPing
demonstration is a simple ARIA client program which has the robot approach
a person and ask if they would like to hear it “go
ping
.”
Don’t run the goPing demo
when attached to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse!
Start the
goPing
demo from
/usr/local/Aria/ArSpeech/examples/
. Once the
goPing
demonstration program has connected, your Performance PeopleBot wanders
and approaches people, asking, “Would you like to hear me go ping?” They will be
given a few seconds to respond to this query, with either a “yes” or a “no.” Speak slowly
and clearly toward the robot’s microphone, which is located at the back of its top deck.
If the answer is “yes,” the robot will make a
ping
-like noise, and then ask you if you would
like to hear it again.
While you are speaking, the demonstration program console should indicate that the
robot is
Listening...
to a voice. The robot’s responses to your voice commands will
also appear as text in the console. If you are having trouble communicating with the
robot, you may need to adjust the volume controls on your computer.
If you do not respond to one of the robot’s questions, or if it does not hear you, it will say,
“No one said anything to me, so I will wander away,” and wander away.
