Fig. 9 Commissioning and troubleshooting
bleshooting of the substation. The built-in
IED simulation functionality enables testing
and verifying of the correct operation of the
HMI and gateway configuration of COM600
without any physical connection of IEDs.
Further, communication diagnostic events can
be enabled to track all messages being sent
by or received from the IEDs.
Using the Station Automation Builder 600
(SAB600) tool provided with COM600 on-
line diagnostic data, real-time process data,
the communication channels and the control
function of the IEDs can be analyzed without
separate protocol analyzers.
12. Communication
redundancy
To maintain and improve the reliability of the
communication network and the communi-
cation between the IEDs and COM600, IEC
62439/PRP (parallel redundancy protocol)-
based communication is supported. PRP is
based on duplicated networks, where each
message is sent via both networks. The first
of the received messages is accepted whereas
the duplicate is discarded. Message replica-
tion and discarding is done by the DuoDriver
in COM600. Further, the DuoDriver hides
the two networks from upper level applica-
tions. IEC 62439/PRP-based communication
requires that COM600 is equipped with the
optional LAN card and that the IEDs used
support PRP.
In addition, COM600 supports switch fault
tolerance (SFT) provided that the optional
LAN-card and COM600 are connected to
two separate switches. SFT creates a failover
relationship between the two adapters con-
nected to separate switches. The manager
responsibility is transferred from one agent
to the other in case of a failure. The Switch
Fault Tolerance feature of the Intel network
adapter requires the Teaming Feature to be
enabled.
