Installing the USB Drivers
Installation is recommended on a machine running Windows® 2000 SP4, XP SP1, Vista® or Windows® 7 but
should also work under Windows® 98.
Note that currently only 32 bit versions are supported.
Contact 3M
technical support if you want to work with a 64 bit operating system.
1.
Copy the drivers to a known location if required. The USB drivers are in the directory
RTE6701USBSerialDrivers on the resource kit download and are not installed as part of the
resource kit installation.
2.
Plug in the passport reader via the USB interface (see
section 6
for connection details), you
should see a found new hardware wizard pop up.
3.
When Windows prompts:-
"Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?"
then select the
"No, not this time"
option.
4.
On the next screen select the "
Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
" option, then
press
NEXT
.
5.
Select the "
Include this location in the search
" option
6.
Use the "
Browse
" button to select the driver files directory on the CD
7.
Click the "
Next
" button to install the drivers
Note that you will need to repeat this process for each physical USB port you use,
however it does not need to be repeated for each reader module plugged into the
port.

Determining the USB port number
The drivers create a virtual COM port which provides an RS232 serial port emulation (also know as Serial Port
Profile SPP) over the USB channel and allows legacy applications using a serial port interface to communicate
with the module. You need to look in the device manager to determine the COM port number.
