3.0 Feeder Cable Preparation, Strain
Relief and Splicing
3.1 Feeder cable diameters for the 3M
™
Integrated
Protection Terminal 4990IPT:
Maximum Diameter
Entrance cable
1.25" (32 mm)
3.2 Remove entrance gasket in the bottom of the
splice chamber.
3.3 Estimate size of cable diameter and slit gasket
in X pattern.
3.4 Slide gasket down the cable past the point of
sheath removal.
3.5 Place cable in temporary position to determine
sheath opening location.
3.6 Allow minimum of 36" (914 mm) of cable beyond
sheath opening location.
3.7 Remove sheath and install 3M
™
Scotchlok
™
Shield Bond Connector, or equivalent, per
company practice.
3.8 Place ground strap on the 3M Scotchlok Shield
Bond Connector, or equivalent, post.
3.9 Install top nut on connector over strap and torque
to 40 in.-lbs.
3.10 Locate cable tie loops at base of splice chamber
and route 3M
™
Cable Ties, or equivalent.
3.11 Route cable to splice chamber making sure
gasket lines up and seals to bottom.
3.12 Use 3M Cable Ties, or equivalent cable ties,
to secure the entrance cable to the base of the
splice chamber.
3.13 Route cable binders to appropriate block tails
and splice per your company practice.
3.14 Bundle splice conductors and place inside
splice chamber.
3.15 Replace splice chamber cover.
4.0 Installing or Replacing the
Electrical Protectors
Note: Use only UL Recognized 3M
™
Single Pair Protectors
2814SPG in the 3M terminals 4990IPTs.
Note: The 3M 2814SPD protectors must be mounted in
a UL listed telephone protection enclosure or in
the 3M Integrated Protection Terminals 4990IPT,
4588IPT and 4588IPTN.
Note: The protectors shall be coordinated with NO. 26
AWG or physically smaller fuse link wire.
Note: All protectors shall conform to installation
requirements of the National Electric Code,
ANSI/NFPA 70 (Article 800).
4.1
The 3M 4990IPT terminals use only 3M Single
Pair Protectors 2814 SPG.
4.2 The protectors must be installed in order to
provide service.
4.3 Insert protectors into the 3M
™
Quick Connect
System (QCS) 2814 block with the block ground
bar in place.
4.4 Raise cap on protector to connect jumper wire.
