Orienting the Diodes
To orient the diodes correctly, look for its stripe. If it has one, the stripe
should correspond to the vertical line on the arrow below. That vertical
line denotes the “cathode” (negative) side of the diode. (The other side
is called the “anode”)
For example:
The Germanium diodes actually have the arrow-like diode symbol
printed on them, so the direction is even easier to identify on those.
LEDs have several ways of identifying the cathode side:
(a) A flat edge on the LED
(b) the shorter lead
(c) the larger metal bit inside the plastic (if you can see it)
All of the above denote the cathode side.
