7. Operation
Before continuing, ensure you have completely read and understood this manual’s
Safety section, in addition to the safety information in the section(s) below.
7.1. Operation Safety
• Always try to solve problems without entering a grain dryer from the inspection hatch or
filler cap.
• Unload the grain dryer only as described in this manual.
• Never enter a grain dryer when loading or unloading.
• Keep away from rotating and moving parts, including the auger flighting, drive components,
shafts, and bearings.
• Lock the grain dryer access points (where equipped) and close all other access doors when
not in use.
• Always operate with guards, covers, and shields in place.
• Ensure maintenance has been performed and is up to date.
• The area around the heater should be kept clear and free from combustible materials and
other flammable liquids.
• Never allow anyone to enter the grain bin when a fan and heater is operating. Gases given
off by the burner (including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) could cause death.
• Have another trained person nearby who can shut down any powered loading, unloading, or
internal equipment in case of accident.
• Keep the work area clean and free of debris.
7.2. Before the First Bin Use
Check the following before filling the bin for the first time:
• Ensure all bolts are in place and properly tightened.
• Check that all ladders, handrails, platforms, and stairways are securely in place.
• Be sure the bin is properly anchored to the foundation.
• Unloading equipment, when equipped, operates freely and all control gates are operable.
7.2.1 Ventilation
• Ensure that the roof exhauster fans are electrically interlocked with aeration fans to prevent the possibility of
roof exhauster fans operating independently.
• Adequate ventilation and/or “makeup air” devices should be provided for all powered air handling systems.
Make certain aeration fans ALWAYS push more air into the bin than roof exhauster fans are pulling out. Any
excess air will flow out through the non-powered vents.
