4. Switch on the Mains On/Off switch and open the rear door during the start-
up beeps. Once the beeps have stopped, close the rear door.
5. The software will be automatically updated. The Status LED will indicate
the following stages:
• It will blink while the SFM data is being read
• It will stay on constantly while the flash memory is erased
• It will blink while the flash memory is being programmed
6. When the process is completed you will hear two beeps, followed by four
beeps when the machine reboots.
7. Remove the SFM Card from the CPU and secure the Front Blanking Panel.
4.4.2.3 Updating the DigiVAC Software from an SFM Card (Manual Mode)
Updates can be carried out from an SFM Card in Manual Mode. In this mode,
the SFM Card is still plugged directly into the GUI CPU, but the transfer of
software is controlled by a computer. This allows the version of software
stored on the SFM Card to be checked before it is installed.
Refer to Section 4.4.3.3 for details of how to perform a Manual Mode software
update using an RS232 cable. Refer to Section 4.4.4.6 for details of how to per-
form a Manual Mode software update using an ethernet connection.
4.4.3 Installing Software Via an RS232 Connection
The GUI CPU can be connected directly to the serial port of a computer using
a 9-pin RS232 cable, part no. 742-213 (see Figure 4:11). These cables are
widely available from most computer supply companies. A software program
called a ‘terminal emulator’ is used to access the GUI boot firmware. Any ter-
minal emulator can be used, as long as the following settings are used:
• Baud rate (bits per second): 38400
• Data bits: 8
• Parity: none
• Stop bits: 1
Windows 95 and later are supplied with a terminal emulator called
‘Hyperterminal’. The procedure described in this chapter refers to this
program, because it is widely available.
Figure 4:11 RS232 Connection
If you intend to update software in this way using a palmtop, note that the soft-
ware requires at least 1Mb of space. Alternatively, a palmtop can be used to
update software from an SFM Card in Manual Mode, (see Section 4.4.3.3).
The transfer of the software from a computer to the GUI CPU is made using
X-modem.
(Arrow indicates position of
RS232 connection).
Glossary
X-modem:
This is a type of
‘protocol’ or language used to
transfer data between two
machines. It has been chosen
because although it is slow, it is
reliable and widely supported.
