6. Notes on Ergonomics
-
Sitting/standing workstations provide for particularly
flexible work organisation. The possibility of adjusting
the height of the full working surface complete with
monitor and input devices enables practically any activity
to be carried out sitting down or standing up.
-
Recommendations:
A.
Frequent short-duration standing is better than long
standing breaks.
B.
Static standing should be avoided.
C.
2 to 4 changes of posture per hour are recommended
[Fig. 4].
-
The monitor should be set up so that there are no re-
flections on the monitor caused by e.g. lights or windows.
The most sensible solution is to set up the monitor so
that it is between two lines of fluorescent luminaires
and your viewing direction is parallel to the window.
The top line on the monitor should not be above the
horizontal axis of vision. For a pleasant head posture
the viewing angle should be lowered by approx. 35°
to the centre of the monitor
[Fig 4]
.
-
Height adjustment also enables the correct sitting
height to be easily adjusted. Wherever possible, use
only seating furniture which is ergonomically shaped
and height-adjustable. The backrest should be shaped
in such a way that the lumbar vertebrae are optimally
supported. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to
adapt the chair exactly to your height and figure.
-
The Council of the European Communities has estab-
lished guidelines and regulations for workstation ergo-
nomics which are subject to EC Directive 90/270/EEC.
-
The German administrative employer’s liability insurance
association has published a guide to the layout of
display screen and office workstations in the Prevention
series (SP 2.1 (BGI 650)).
