Transmission Oil, Change
1 Trim the drive to the vertical position. Remove the
cover (
1
).
2 Remove the propeller.
3 Place a container under the drive. Remove the oil
plug (
4
) and gasket from the stern drive housing.
Allow the oil to begin to run out.
4 Carefully undo the plug (
2
). Then remove the plug
completely. Allow all the oil to drain from the stern
drive.
5 Reinstall the gasket. If the gasket is damaged it
must be replaced with a new one. Screw the plug
back (
4
).
6 Reinstall the propeller.
7 Trim up the drive to 35°.
8 Fill with oil. The oil level must always reach the oil
filler cap (
3
) upper part. For oil grade and quantity
refer to
Technical Data page 128
.
9 Lower the stern drive and raise it again to 35° to
eliminate any air pockets.
10 Remove the oil filler cap and check the oil level. Fill
with oil if the oil filler cap is not completely full.
11 Check that the plug is tightened. Fit the cover.
12 Hand the waste oil to a recycling depot.
The oil must have a golden brown nuance. If the oil is
gray, water has entered the stern drive. In this case let
a Volvo Penta workshop carry out checks on the stern
drive.
Checking oil level, power trim
The Power Trim system is a closed center hydraulic
system. Regular checks of the oil level are not neces-
sary, but if functionality deteriorates check the fluid
level in the Power Trim system.
1 Trim the stern drive in and out a little.
2 Check that the oil level is between the MAX and
MIN marks on the oil reservoir.
3 Fill with ATF as necessary.
When emptying the system, refill with new oil and trim
the stern drive in and out 6 to 10 times to expel air from
the system. Check the oil level and top up if necessary.
