reADing the VAlues
Testing of the direction of rotation takes place exclusively via the outer conductor
L1, L2, L3. A neutral or ground conductor is not required. Reversing a phase or
neutral conductor can result in a missing or faulty indication of rotation.
A voltage of > 90 V /AC between any two phases (L1, L2 or L3) is detected as a
„phase present“.
The LED indicator displays the phase sequence, the direction of rotation and the phase,
which in some cases might be absent. For further explanations of the symbols, please see
the description printed on the product or the table below.

Apart from the occasional battery change, the meter is maintenance-free for you.
Never clean the product when it is turned on. Use a clean, dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Do not
use aggressive cleaning agents, as these can cause discolouration. Do not press too strongly
on the surface when cleaning, to prevent scratch marks.
For easier cleaning, the protective rubber cover can be removed from the device. However,
replace it after the cleaning in order to protect the device.
DisposAl
a) general
Please dispose of the unserviceable product according to the relevant statutory
requirements.
b) Batteries
You as the ultimate consumer are legally obliged (Regulation on Spent Batteries) to return all
dead batteries and accumulators. Disposal in the household waste is prohibited.
Contaminated batteries/rechargeable batteries are labelled with these symbols
to indicate that disposal in the domestic waste is forbidden. The symbols of the
relevant heavy metals are: Cd = Cadmium, Hg = Mercury, Pb = Lead.
You can return your used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge to the
official collection points in your municipality, in our stores, or anywhere batteries or
rechargeable batteries are sold.

inserting/replAcing BAtteries
1. Weak or not very bright LEDs, must be changed. Do this
with the test leads disconnected from the meter.
2. Carefully remove the protective rubber cover from the
meter.
3. Remove the small screws from the battery compartment
with a small Phillips screwdriver.
4. Remove the flat battery/rechargeable battery, if neces-
sary, and connect a new battery of the same design and
type (see Technical Data) with the correct polarity to the
battery clip.
5. Insert the battery/rechargeable battery carefully into the battery compartment. Make sure
that no cables are pinched.
6. Carefully close the battery compartment cover again and replace the protective cover to
protect the meter against outside influence.

Make sure that a measurement at a voltage of 500 – 600 V does not take longer than
10 minutes.
Otherwise, this could damage the product.
a) measurement through direct contact or leads
Connect the test leads to the terminals marked identical “8” of the instrument. L1A, L2B and
L3C. Install the provided alligator clips or other suitable test probes on the test leads.
Connect the three test leads to the three phases of a three-phase network (L1, L2, L3) or a
three-phase motor (U, V, W). With an active current network, the 3 LEDs “1” show you the
activity of the phases.
Press button “5”. As long as you hold this button depressed, the LED “4” shows you the active
operation and the LED “2” a right-rotating, or the LED “3” a left-rotating, field.
b) measurement without contact
The VC36 offers you the option of measuring the rotary
field without contact. This is possible for one- and three-
phase motors.
To do this, lay the meter on the A/C motor as shown.
Press button “5”. The LED “2” or “3” shows you the
respective rotary direction. In this process, make sure
that you do not come into contact with moving parts of
the motor.
