Measuring Purge Drain Rate
Install the provided 1/2” plug x 3/4” elbow as shown to
begin piping the drain line.
This fitting provides easy access for measuring the drain
purge rate when the unit is operating by removing the
1/2” plug.
WATER QUALITY PURGE CONTROL
PURGE ADJUSTMENT
It is recommended to measure or refer to the local water conditions with regard to Hardness and Alkalinity to help you with the best
water purge rate selection (Figure 6).
Use the “Purge Adjustment Valve” to control the amount of water that is purged from the unit during operation (Figure 9, part 10)
note: The Purge Adjustment Valve is shipped to provide a large purge rate at startup. This large purge rate will help flush and clean
the purge assembly. Refer to Figure 6 and Figure 8 to select your purge rate and adjust as needed.
Using the Purge Adjustment chart (Figure 8), plot your units application and find the suggested ounces per min purge rate. This
is measured at the provided plug elbow just outside the unit (Figure 7). Slowly adjust the Purge Adjustment Valve from a closed
position to a open position to redudce the purge drain rate. Allow the system to stabilize and measure the purge drain for your
target amount, adjust as needed.
Suggested start up and measurement techniques
T
he purge rate can vary a little when first installed. The purge rate is adjusted by using the purge valve located just below the purge
collector piping. It is best to measure the drain serveral times durig the start up in order to average the purge rate.
The purge valve adjustments should be done slowly as it will take 30 seconds for the internal
water level to adjust to the new setting. After several minutes measure the purge rate
using the plug elbow as a convenient location. It is recommended to take several 1 minute
measurements and average the results. A good technique is to take 3 one-minute measurements
over 5-10 minutes of operation. If adjustment is required, make small adjustments and recheck
results over several tests to ensure you have consistency.
Helpful tips
When unsure of the water conditions use the maximum purge rate. The Purge
Adjustment
control table assumes the use of Nu-Calgons EvapTreat food grade Polyphosphate water treatment 4173-04.
The “Purge adjustment valve” allows you to set the correct amount of purge drain water. The local water conditions (Hardness and
Alkalinity) will help to predict the best setting. (Figure 6 & Figure 8)
note: During annual service, review the condition of the pump screen for help in determining your sump water condition. If you see a
lot of
scale forming on the pump screen, this would indicate that you should increase the purge rate up to the maximum setting for your model
and your existing water condition. Measure and test the purge rate using the Adjustment valve and by measuring the purge water from the
drain plug to the correct pruge target.
All water control information includes the use of Nu-Calgon EVAPTreat water conditioning. This is a food grade polyphosphate used
to
keep minerals suspended in the water until purged. The control table provided includes the use of the EVAPTreat water conditioning. This
product is replaced at the beginning of each air conditioning season.
