An oscillatory system response produces a constant-amplitude, continuous-position
oscillation. An oscillatory system is characterized by infinite settling times.
3.5 Tutorial
– Manually tuning from scratch
You will need to use the Windows PIDTuning application to change your
coefficients. With the application connected after hitting the start button you can see
the reaction of your system to changes in parameters on the graph. The
Auto Zoom
check box allows you to zoom into the performance graph for observing small
response changes. Perform the following steps to tune your PID control system. You
are aiming for a critically damped response.
1.
Set all three PID parameters, Kp, Kd, and Ki to 0 and set Os% to 20.
2.
Start by tuning Kp. Set it to a number that is much lower than needed. If you are
unsure, start with 0.5. (When changing Kp, Ki or Kd click the
Send
button. Use a
combination of
Send
,
Start
Stop
to complete the tuning steps below.)
3.
Click the Start button to view a step response graph of your system.
4.
If the graph shows the parameter is:
Too Low - Double the value of the parameter
Too High - Set the parameter to halfway between the current value and the
previous value.
