The edge setting is a matter of individual preference. Some images tend to look
better with mono edges (also called “halos”). The goal is to achieve the right
amount of edge sharpening without over-accentuating the halos.
The Filter Control section in the Unsharp Masking window allows you to select or
deselect sharpening in light edge and dark edge areas. PowerColor’s default is
“on” for both settings. Deselecting Light Edges tends to bring out dark edges and
detail and vice versa.
Using the Unsharp Masking Curve
The curve at the bottom of the Unsharp Masking window graphically depicts the
transition from gray to white in unsharp masking. The Shape field governs how
quickly the colors ramp from gray to white, while Radius is a measure of how
wide the halo effect is at the edges of the tonal regions. As you change these val-
ues, the curve at the left changes shape.
