Bandwidth
The range of frequencies available across a
communications channel; in one sense, the
“size” of the communications channel.

Category 3, 4, 5
Communication cabling standards refer-
ring to the quality of the transmission
medium and whether or not the cable in-
cludes transmission shielding.
Collision
Simultaneous data transmission on a net-
work medium, resulting in a garbled (and
unreadable) transmission. See
“CSMA/CD.”
Collision Domain
A section of a network isolated from other
sections by a switch, bridge, or hub that
detects and resolves collisions locally so
that there is less impact on the entire net-
work.
