Chapter 1 Overview of
the Devicenet Module
1.1 Features and System Configuration Examples of the
DeviceNet Module (DN311)
This section describes the features and system configuration examples of the DeviceNet
module (DN311) for the controller model 3000 of the Integrated Controller V Series. The
DN311 is an interface module for connecting the DeviceNet, which is a device level
network for FA (factory automation), to the controller model 3000.
Hereafter, the sequence controller model 3000 of the Integrated Controller V Series is
called the S controller and the DeviceNet module for the model 3000, the DN311.
(1) Made to conform to the DeviceNet specifications
DeviceNet is a standardized device level network for factory automation (FA),
developed by RockWell Automation Co. in the U.S.A. A nonprofit organization,
called ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association), now plays the principal role in
the maintenance and extension of the DeviceNet specifications and in introducing
compatible products.
The DN311, functioning as the master device (master station) on a DeviceNet,
performs data input/output between itself and the DeviceNet slave devices (slave
stations), which are developed by various manufacturers (vendors) at home and
abroad and conform with the DeviceNet specifications, thus serving as an interface
between the S controller and the slave devices.
(2) Input/Output Data Size, Number of Connecting Slave Devices, Communication Rate
and Network Length
One DeviceNet network can be connected to the DN311. The size of input/
output data between the DN311 and connected slave devices is 378 words
(input) and 378 words (output) (16 points per word). Unless the total count of
input/output data to and from the connected slave devices exceeds 378 words,
data can be input and output to and from up to 63 slave devices. (Since the
amount of data output to a slave device and the amount of data input from a
slave device vary depending on the slave device, check the slave device
specifications.)
The definition of input/output data treated in this manual is shown in the figure
below.
Figure 1-1 Definition of Input/Output Data
Any of three communication rates, 500 kbps, 250 kbps and 125kbps, can be selected.
The maximum network length varies depending on the communication rate (l00 m for
500 kbps, 250 m for 250 kbps, and 500 m for 125 kbps).
The details are explained in Section 1.2 Network Configuration of DeviceNet.
(3) Data Input/Output Method
The DN311 supports the "polling instruction/response" and "bit strobe instruction/
