4. Push down on the handle to tip the mower and the

engine backward, allowing more oil to run into the
drain pan.

5. Install the drain plug and refill the crankcase with the

proper oil; refer to Checking the Engine Oil Level.

Servicing the Air Cleaner

Service Interval:

Every 25 hours—Clean and oil the air

cleaner foam element. (More often in
dirty or dusty conditions)
Every 100 hours—Clean or replace
the paper air filter element. (More
often in dirty or dusty conditions)
Every 300 hours—Change the air
filter paper element

Important:

Service the air cleaner more often in

dirty or dusty conditions

1. Make sure the wire is off of the spark plug.
2. Remove the wing nuts securing the air cleaner cover

and remove the cover (Figure 21).

Figure 21

3. Clean the cover thoroughly.
4. If the foam element is dirty, remove it from the paper

element (Figure 22) and clean thoroughly, as follows:
A. Wash the foam element in a solution of liquid

soap and warm water. Squeeze it to remove dirt,
but do not twist it because the foam may tear.

B. Dry the foam element by wrapping it in a clean

rag. Squeeze the rag and foam element to dry
it, but do not twist it.

C. Saturate the foam element with clean engine oil.

Squeeze the element to remove excess oil and
to distribute the oil thoroughly. An oil damp
element is desirable.

5. Check condition of the paper element. Clean by

gently tapping the filter or replace it as required.

Important:

Do not use compressed air to clean

the paper element.

6. Install the foam element, paper element, and air

cleaner cover.

Important:

Do not operate the engine without

the air cleaner element because extreme engine
wear and damage will likely result.

Replacing the Spark Plug

Service Interval:

Every 100 hours

Use an NGK BPR 5ES spark plug or equivalent. The
correct air gap is 0.028-0.032 inch.

1. Pull the molded wire off of the spark plug (Figure 23).

Figure 23

1.

2. Clean around the spark plug and remove it from the

cylinder head.

Important:

Replace a cracked, fouled, or dirty

electrodes because engine damage could result
from grit entering the cylinder.
