3 Operation
This chapter describes how to operate PICO D. Be sure to read it carefully before
you mount and start PICO D.
An external computer that supplies the required analog signals for tuning the wave-
length and setting the optical power output level, respectively, normally controls
PICO D. The computer also supervises the PICO D unit by reading the digital status
signals and setting the digital control signals.
The signal used for tuning the wavelength is typically an analog voltage ramp (saw
tooth of triangle wave) generated by the DAC interface in the computer. Hence, the
tuning speed is solely determined by the analog signal. Same yields for the optical
power control. We recommend that a DAC having 18 bit resolution is used.
PICO D must be calibrated in order to achieve optimum performance. This means in
practice that a “calibration matrix” containing tuning voltages vs. wavelengths for a
set of optical output powers. The calibration matrix is then used to linearize the tun-
ing voltage
vs
. wavelength.
As mentioned, PICO D can be swept between any two wavelengths within the tuning
range. However, PICO D can also be fixed tuned to a specific wavelength, or jump-
ing between any fixed wavelengths in a random sequence.

Switching ON the PICO D
Wavelength and optical output power are controlled with connector located on the
rear side of PICO D, see Figure 2–15
Step by step instruction
1) Connect the +5 V.
2) Next c15 V, and –15 V supplies.
3) When the system is started, the _TEMPERATURE_ERROR will turn TRUE
and other status signals will turn FALSE. The digital status signal _ TEM-
PERATURE_ERROR will be TRUE until correct working temperature has
been reached.
It normally takes about 30 minutes for PICO D to reach correct working tem-
perature. The time it takes depends on the environmental temperature.
4) Wait until the _ TEMPERATURE_ERROR switches from TRUE to FALSE,
indicating that the correct working temperature has been reached. The tech-
nical specifications of PICO D are not valid until the _ TEMPERA-
TURE_ERROR indicates FALSE.
5) Enable control of PICO D by setting the following digital control signals to
ENABLE to LOW (0 V) the following digital control signals: WAVE-
LENGTH_TUNING_ENABLE, OPTICAL_POWER_ENABLE.
6) The PICO D unit can now be tuned by applying a voltage b10 and
–10 V to the +WAVELENGTH_TUNING and the –WAVELENGTH_TUNING
