Spikes There is electrical interference
from other modules.
Isolate the electrical circuit
from strong current consumers.
Consider installing an
uninterruptible power supply
(UPS).

Negative peaks Sample solvent and mobile phase
differ in composition.
Dissolve the sample in the
mobile phase.
The absorption of the solute is
lower than the absorption of mobile
phase.
Select a different wavelength.
Use a mobile phase with less
UV background absorption.
Poor peak area precision The capillary connections are not
installed properly or they are not
tight.
Check and tighten the capillary
connections. Consider using
Viper capillaries.
Exchange the needle seat if

There are dead volumes in the
capillary connections.
Replace the fittings. Make sure
that the capillaries are installed
