The perfect PC
Sorry, it hasn't been built yet. Every PC has its advantages and disadvantages and should
therefore be designed for its primary purpose. In the following, we've compiled a little list to
help you in your selection:
The CPU
The speed of the CPU tends to be of secondary importance when working with DV video. It
does become relevant, however, when working with video effects and complex cross-fades. A
fast CPU will speed processing of effects and reduce waiting times. We recommend Intel Pen-
tium III or AMD Athlon CPUs for video editing.
Main memory
Video editing involves the manipulation of video material. The capacity to keep large volumes
of data in memory without continually writing to and reading from the hard drive will provide
noticeable performance benefits. Although 64 MB RAM is adequate, we recommend a main
memory of 128 MB. If you are using Windows 98 SE, there is unfortunately little point in hav-
ing more memory.
The hard drive
No other component plays such an important role for digital video editing as the hard drive.
As a rule, any current hard drive should be able to read and write the required volume of data
quickly enough. If you're using IDE hard drive please be sure that the hard drive is in DMA
mode. In addition, we recommend using a second hard drive which is reserved exclusively for
video data.
