INPUT COUPLING

 

CAPACITOR  PRECHARGING

When  the  in p u t  coupling  switch  is  set to   G N D , the  in p u t 

signal  is  connected  to   ground  through  the  in p u t  coupling 

capacitor  in  series  w ith   a  1-M12  resistor  to   fo rm   a  pre­
charging  netw ork.  This  netw ork  allows  the  in p u t  coupling 
capacitor  to   charge  to   the  average  dc-voltage  level  o f  the 

signal  applied  to   the  probe.  Thus,  any  large  voltage 
transients  th a t  may  accidentally  be  generated  w ill  n o t  be 
applied  to   the  am p lifie r  in p u t  when  the  in p u t  coupling 
switch  is  moved  fro m   GND  to   AC.  The  precharging  net­
w o rk   also  provides  a  measure  o f  p ro te ctio n   to  the  external 
c irc u itry   by  reducing  the  current  levels  th a t  can  be  drawn 

fro m   the  external  c irc u itry   during capacitor charging.

The  fo llo w in g   procedure  should  be  used  whenever  the 

probe  tip   is  connected  to   a  signal  source  having  a  d iffe re n t 
dc  level  than  th a t  previously  applied,  especially  if  the  dc- 
level  difference  is  more  than  10  tim es  the  V O L T S /D IV  

sw itch  setting:

1. 

Set  the  AC-GND-DC  switch  to   GND  before  con­

necting  the  probe  tip   to   a  signal  source.

2. 

Insert  the  probe  tip   in to   the  oscilloscope  GND 

connector.
