(2) WITH THE MOTOR OFF:

A. TURN OFF THE PETROL TAP IF THE
MOTOR IS FITTED WITH ONE.

B. DISCONNECT THE SPARKPLUG CABLE
FROM THE SPARKPLUG AND KEEP THE
TWO SEPARATE.

C. MOVE THE STARTER SWITCH TO “OFF”
AND REMOVE THE STARTER KEY (IF THE
MOTOR IS FITTED WITH THESE OPTIONS).
THIS REDUCES THE POSSIBILITY OF NON-
AUTHORISED IGNITION OF THE MOTOR
WHEN THE EQUIPMENT IS NOT OPERATING.

D. NEVER STORE THE MOTOR WITH FUEL IN
THE TANK IN A CLOSED OR POORLY VENTI-
LATED ENVIRONMENT, OR WHERE FUEL
VAPOURS CAN REACH OPEN FLAMES,
SPARKS OR THE PILOT FLAMES OF WATER
HEATERS OR OTHER APPARATUS.

MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HEAT
SHIELD AND SURROUNDING PARTS MAY
EXCEED 60º C. DO NOT TOUCH.

(1) OIL LEVEL

Always check the oil level before using the motor
and every five (5) hours’ operation (see the instruc-
tions “FILL THE OIL SUMP OR CHECK THE OIL
LEVEL”).

(2) OIL CHANGING

Change the oil after the first two hours’ operation
and subsequently every 25 hours, or more fre-
quently if the motor is being run in difficult condi-
tions or in particularly dusty environments. Change
the oil while the engine is still hot after operation.

A. DISCONNECT THE HIGH TENSION SPARK-
PLUG LEAD

B. Clean the area round the oil drainage cap (Fig.
4-7).

C. Position the machine so that the oil drainage
cap is in the lowest part of the motor.

D. Remove the oil drainage cap and the oil filler
cap and let the motor oil flow out of the cylinder.

E. Reposition the drainage cap and close tightly.

F. Refill the motor with a recommended motor oil
(see chapters OIL and FUEL, and oil checking and
filling instructions).

G. Reposition the oil filler cap and close tightly.

H. Clean any spilled oil.

(3) COOLING SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: FREQUENTLY REMOVE ANY CUT
GRASS, DIRT OR DEBRIS FROM THE COOLING
BLADES, AIR INTAKES, TIE RODS AND LEVERS.
THIS HELPS TO GUARANTEE SUITABLE COO-
LING AND TO ENSURE THE MOTOR TURNS AT
THE CORRECT SPEED.

(4) AIR FILTER (Fig. 7)

CAUTION:

never run the motor if the filter is not

fitted correctly.

A) MAINTENANCE OF THE PAPER FILTER ELE-

MENT (7-2)

Never clean or grease the paper element.
Replace it once a year, or after every 50 hours of
operation, and more frequently if the motor is used
in particularly difficult conditions. Spare parts are
obtainable through the Tecumseh service network.

SPONGE ELEMENT (pre-filter), (7-3). Never grease
the sponge element.
Clean it every three (3) months or after every 25
hours’ operation of the motor. Clean it more often
if the motor is used in particularly difficult condi-
tions.
a) Wash it in water with a detergent solution.
b) Rinse carefully in clean water. Dry in the air.

B) DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY OF THE

FILTER

1) Remove the cover (7-4) from the filter body (7-1)

by loosening the screw (7-5) on the cover (do
not remove the screw from the cover) and
unhooking the positioning teeth from their seats
on the filter body.

2) Remove the paper element and the sponge ele-

ment from the filter cover.

3) Check the colour variation and the dirt accumu-

lated in the filter element. If necessary, replace it
and carry out maintenance as indicated in the
paragraph FILTER MAINTENANCE.

4) Carefully clean the inside of the filter body and

cover.

5) Reassemble the sponge element and the paper

element in the cover.

6) Reassemble the cover on the body. Hook the

positioning teeth to their seats on the filter body.
Screw the cover on tightly.

(5) SPARK PLUG (Fig. 5)

Check periodically
1. Clean area around SPARK PLUG
2. Remove and inspect SPARK PLUG.
3. Replace SPARK PLUG if electrodes are pitted or
burned or porcelain is cracked. For replacement use
CHAMPION RJ17 LM or RJ19 LM  (OHV CHAMPION
RN4C) or equivalent.

NOTE - Engine is fitted with SPARK PLUG which has
8 mm. (OHV 19 mm.) long thread. The use of a
SPARK PLUG with longer thread can seriously
damage the engine and this is NOT covered by war-
ranty (Fig. 5).

4. If re-utilising the sparkplug, check that the elec-
trode distance is 0.6 mm (Fig. 5).
5. Screw the sparkplug back in tightly.

(6)  CHECK FREQUENTLY THAT NO NUTS,

BOLTS OR OTHER PARTS ARE LOOSE
ON THE MOTOR, AND IF THEY ARE,
TIGHTEN THEM.

(7) BATTERY (E.S. MODELS)

MAINTAIN THE BATTERY FULLY CHARGED TO
GUARANTEE IMMEDIATE STARTING OF THE
MOTOR.

N.B. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS SUPPLIED BY THE
BATTERY AND MACHINE MANUFACTURERS.
