WITH THE SPEED SYSTEM
The manufacturer has trimmed the glider to fly in the middle of the speed range. If you increase to
maximum speed using the speed system you will move forward significantly faster and stay higher
when flying across or into wind (better penetration). To do so, hold the brakes in the high position
and be prepared to rapidly release the accelerator, going back to original position, in the event of
a deflation. Be ready to use the brakes as required.
One benefit of the speed system foot bar is that an impending tuck can be recognised by sudden
reduction of pressure on the foot bar. Rapid release of the foot bar is an adequate countermeasure.
Extending the foot bar by 10 cm (size M: 12 cm) will accelerate the glider to a high speed. In these
circumstances a collapse of one side of the airfoil will, of course, have a more dynamic effect than
would the same collapse at trim speed.
Only use the foot bar when you have sufficient ground clearance. Don’t allow the high stability of
the canopy at maximum speed to make you foolhardy. If you treat the accelerated characteristics
with respect, you will have great fun with the increased performance of the Blue, as well as it’s
greater margin of safety through speed.
TURNING
The BLUE is very responsive to inputs through the brakes, and thus provides high manoeuvrability.
The harmonic coupling of brake line distance and angle of bank means there are advantages to also
use the brake on the outer wing when circling with shallow bank angles. Narrow, steep turns can
be flown at full speed by pulling one brake line, or by simultaneously releasing the outer brake as
you accelerate from flying with brakes applied, and immediately enter a turn.
Flying with a low angle of bank, for example when climbing slowly, is enhanced by applying some
brake to the outside wing.
Caution: Never initiate turns at minimum speed (with full brakes), you will run the risk of spinning!
The BLUE responds very well to weight shifting: by leaning to the side you want to turn your BLUE
will turn more willingly. A helpful hint for more skilled pilots who already have developed a feeling
for the stall point in turning: For climbing in weak lift with lowest bank - and a big enough radius of
turn - it is advantageous to increase the load on the outside wing by weight shifting in the opposite
direction to the turn.
