Typical Hydrometer Float
Specific Gravity Test
NOTE: The batteries must be fully charged before performing this test.
The specific gravity of a cell is an indication of the actual state of charge of the cell.
A fully charged cell should have a reading of 1275 to 1300 (see the illustration to
the right). A discharged battery will read 1100. Ideally, all cells in a battery pack
will have the same reading. Any cells in a battery pack that vary by more than
30-points may be an indication of a bad cell.
Clean the batteries. Refer to
Cleaning the Batteries
section for information
on cleaning the batteries.
Using part number
77-200-00
hydrometer, check and record the specific gravity
of each cell in the battery pack.
If, after charging, none of the cells exceed a hydrometer reading of 1250 then
there may be a fault in the charging system. If the charging system checks OK
then the batteries are no longer accepting a charge and should be replaced.
NOTE: Refer to Charger Troubleshooting
for information on checking the
charging system.
The highest reading will be the cell that is accepting the most charge. This reading
will be used to gauge all other cells.
Compare the specific gravity readings to the highest reading, if the difference
between any of the cells is more than 30-points, then that battery should be
replaced.
NOTE: If the batteries are over one year old, it is recommended to replace them as a set.
Reconnect the batteries, remove the blocks from the wheels and test drive.
