1. INTRODUCTION
The
TAPESWITCH Safety Edge sensor
is a pressure-sensitive safety device designed to protect operators
working at or near dangerous machinery. The switch functions as a momentary-contact, normally-open switch
which electrically closes when force is applied in the normal direction to the edge sensor.
Multiple safety edge sensors may be wired, in series, to form a larger sensing area. In a sensing edge safety
configuration, a small electrical signal flows through (from the safety interface controller - SIM) the upper and
lower conductors of the insert switch element(s) at all times. This signal is used by the safety interface
controller/
s
afety interface module (SIM) to continuously monitor safety integrity.
When an appropriate (force distance relationship for all edge sensors in this manual) actuating force is applied to
the active area of the edge sensor, the internal ribbon switch closes (from open circuit to closed circuit), which, in
turn, causes an appropriate SIM to recognize this condition and thus initiate a stop command to the prime motion.
If any of the connecting wiring, internal or external to the safety edge sensor should break or separates (using an
appropriate SIM), this is also detected by the controller and, in turn, causes the SIM to recognize this condition
and thus initiate a stop command to the prime motion and should not attempt to begin running until the fault
condition is fully accessed , repaired and tested. thus, the machine cannot run unless there is integrity throughout
the safety configuration.
When correctly installed and interfaced to a machine (through a SIM), the safety edge configuration can initiate a
stop command to the machine primary control element (MPCE), and/or parts of the machine chosen by the
designer.
NOTE
Tapeswitch safety edge sensors, individually or wired together, do not by themselves constitute
a complete safety system. The user must also select a safety interface controller/safety interface
module (SIM) that complies with annex B of ISO 13849-1 (EN954-1) and the guidelines in ANSI
B11.19 as well as any and all updated local and federal requirements.
This controller must include dual channel monitoring such that a single electrical failure in the
edge sensors, interconnecting wiring, or the control unit itself will be detected and will shut
down the machine.
This will establish a complete safety machine interface system. In addition, the category rating
will then be at the level of the attached controller to a maximum category level of 3.
