Alphabet Input Procedure
To activate the alphabet input function, issue an OUT statement in a user program, which
sets 1 to bit 0 of port 5. To deactivate the function, issue an OUT statement which sets 0 to
bit 0 of port 5.
• To activate: OUT 5, &h1
• To deactivate: OUT 5, &h0.
The alphabet input function is deactivated by default. To enter alphabetic characters from
the keypad:
1. Check the position of the desired character (left, center, or right) relative to the
three characters assigned to the target key.
2. Indicate that character’s position by pressing the M1 or M2 key to cycle through the
shift guidance blocks Left, Center, and Right on the LCD as described below.
3. While holding down the M1 or M2 key at the desired position (Left, Center, or
Right), press the target key.

Using the M1 and M2 Keys
When the M1 or M2 key is held down, the shift guidance block appears on the top or bottom
line, depending upon the current cursor position. That is, if the cursor lies on any of the
lower lines, the shift guidance block appears on the top line; if it lies on any of the upper
lines, the block appears on the bottom line. Press the target key while holding down the M1
or M2 key. To enter an N character, for example, use the M1 or M2 key to display the Center
on the LCD. While displaying the Center, press the 5 key.
• For alphabet input, you can use the
BS, C,
and numeric keys as usual.
• The PDT 1100 overwrites the status indication ON to display the shift block Right.
• The activated or deactivated state of the alphabet input function is resumed.
• The shift block is not resumed.
