HTML (Hypertext
Markup Language)
The language used to create Web pages.
ICMP (Internet
Control Message
Protocol)
An extension to the basic Internet Protocol (IP) that
provides feedback about network problems.
IGMP (Internet
Group Management
Protocol)
An extension to the basic Internet Protocol (IP) that is
used to broadcast multimedia over the Internet.
IMAP4 (Internet
Message Access
Protocol version 4)
One of the two most popular protocols for receiving
email. IMAP makes messages available to read and
manage without downloading them to your computer.
infrared (IR) port
A communication port on a handheld device for
interfacing with an infrared-capable device. Infrared
ports do not use cables.
IP (Internet
Protocol)
The protocol that underlies most Internet traffic. IP
determines how data flows from one computer to
another. Computers on the Internet have IP addresses
that uniquely identify them.
IP address (Internet
Protocol address)
A numeric identifier that uniquely identifies a
computer on the Internet. IP addresses are usually
shown as four groups of numbers separated by
periods. For example, 206.204.52.71.
ISP (Internet service
provider)
A company that supplies Internet access to
individuals and companies. Most ISPs offer additional
Internet connectivity services, such as Web site
hosting.
Java
A programming language used to create small
programs called applets. Java applets can be used to
create interactive content on Web pages.
