Clearance
Clearance
All reeds are attached with its one side recurved, that is called “Clearance”.
The reeds response differently by width of the clearance. While each model is adjusted
to the best clearance in shipment, it is also available to custom-order the clearance or
readjust the clearance changed during the performance. If the clearance is little, the
reed responses well to even weak breath but not to strong breath. If the clearance is
too much, it responses well to strong breath but not to weak breath.
Before tuning, have the tunor ready that allows to measure by 1 cent.
Be sure to adjust the clearance before tuning. The pitch is effected by the clearance.
The pitch is also slightly effected by the type of a mouthpieces, short or tube. It is
better to measure the pitch with a mouthpiece of daily use.
After checking the clearance, if the air box is detached, attach it in the reverse proce-
dure to A-3. In this process, handle the model like M-32C etc. carefully that has the
plastic part directly screwed not to strip threads of the body and cause the screws to
be unusable. The models with metal cover do not need attaching the cover but the
models like MX-32C etc. whose cover and air box are combined need attaching the
upper and lower cover. After the covers are attached, put on the mouthpiece to check
for no air leakage.
Use an edge file and spatula. Each reed corresponds to each tone and is located just on
the back of the key. Detach the air box again and file the reed to be tuned to the right
pitch, close to 0 cent.
Insert a spatula under the reed and file the edge of the reed, and some burr will
stick out from the sides. Then, remove the burr with an edge file since it cuases
squealing if it remains.
After tuning, attach the air box again and measure the pitch.
If the right pitch is not attained, detach the air box and file the reed again.
The reed is recurved up to 2/3 of the whole length from the edge.
