SC417J Chassis Manual
E-2
E-3 SC417J E16 Series SAS2 JBOD Chassis
Each SC417J E16 series SAS2 JBOD chassis contains four SAS2 expander back-
planes, forty-five 3.5” drives (SAS or SATA) and one PTJBOD card. The PTJBOD
card drives the chassis LEDs and fans. See the CSE-PTJBOD-CB2 section below
for details. The content of this appendix will focus on how this chassis can be con-
figured both internally and externally.
There are four SAS-2 expander backplanes that are used in SC417J E16 series,
three SAS2-2166EL1/EL2 backplanes and one SAS2-213EL1/EL2 backplane. Ad-
ditional details on these two backplanes and how you can internally connect them
is discussed in section A-4 and in the backplane appendices of this manual. For
external connectivity please see section A-5 of this manual.
It is very important to us expanders and hard drives which have been tested and are
recommended for use by Supermicro. Although other components which have not
been tested might work, they will not be supported by Supermicro. To know which
expanders and hard drives are compatible with this system, contact Supermicro's
Technical Support department at www.supermicro.com.

Section 1
– SC847E16 series SAS-2 JBOD chassis
Each SAS-2 847
JBOD
chassis
(i.e. SC847E16 series -)
contains 2 SAS-2 expander
backplanes, 45 3.5” drives (i.e. can be either SAS or SATA) and a PTJBOD card, see
Section 1.1
(i.e. CSE-PTJBOD-CB2). The PTJBOD drives the chassis’s LEDs and fans.
Here we will focus on how this chassis can be configured internally and externally.
There are two SAS-2 expander backplanes that are used in SC847E16 series. BPN-SAS2-
846EL1/2 and BPN-SAS2-826EL1/2. More detail on these two backplanes and how you
can internally connect them will be discussed in section 2. For external connectivity
please see section 3.
It’s also very important to follow SMCI’s “Expander/HDD compatibility” list which is
published on SMCI’s web site. All the components in the compatibility list have been
qualified and are recommended by SMCI. Although components outside of the
compatibility list might work but they will not be supported by SMCI. See
http://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/files/storage/SAS-1-CompList.pdf
for latest
list. This document will focus on single expander version.

This card is not in IO path and its main goal is to drive the sideband related elements of
the chassis.
