Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup

Installing a Passive CPU Heatsink

1.  Apply the proper amount of thermal grease to the heatsink.

2.  Place the heatsink on top of the CPU so that the four mounting holes are aligned 

with those on the retention mechanism. Be sure to align the heatsink fins with 
the direction of airflow from the fans.

3.  Screw in two diagonal screws (#1 and #2) until just snug—do not over-tighten 

and damage the CPU. Screw in the remaining screws.

4.  Finish the installation by fully tightening all four screws.

Removing the Passive Heatsink

Caution: 

Supermicro does not recommend removing the CPU or the heatsink. 

However, if you must remove the heatsink, please follow the instructions to avoid 
damage.

1.  Unscrew the mounting screws.

2.  Gently wriggle the heatsink to loosen it. Do not use excessive force.

3.  Once the heatsink is loosened, remove it.
