1.6.2. Handle
The handle of
ST 401 ‘Cayman’
comprises a battery compartment, a control panel, and
mechanical parts that form the bearing structure. The appearance of the handle and the location
of its components are shown in Fig. 6.

In the upper part, the handle is equipped with the control panel (Fig. 6: 1) that has a 6-key
membrane keyboard (Fig. 7) with the following key assignments:
1 – search mode selection
2 and 3 – receiver sensitivity controls
4 and 5 – selection of probing frequency combinations in the AUDIO mode
6 – AUDIO mode ON switch.

The handle has a battery compartment for two rechargeable batteries (type 18650). Those are
enclosed with a screw cap (Fig. 6: 2) that also serves as the negative contact.
When inserting the
batteries, please observe polarity, as shown in Fig. 8.

Fore of the handle are the headphone socket (Fig. 6: 3) and the power-on & volume control
button (Fig. 6: 4). In the lower part there are a speaker grid and an outlet for the control-and-
power cable (Fig. 6: 4) whose other end has an angular connector, to be plugged into the socket
on the antenna head (Fig. 4:12).
ST 401 ‘Cayman’
is labelled with an ID plate that indicates
– product name
– serial number
– logo, name, and country of the manufacturer company
The ID plate location is shown in Fig. 6 (7).
