MECHANICS: RE-ENGAGING THE HAMMER BLOCK IF THE HAMMER IS COCKED, BUT
THE TRIGGER NOT PULLED (Continued)
Method 1
– Manually releasing the trigger while lowering the hammer.
In this method, move the firing pin selector to Position 2, the safe position. Support or block the hammer
with the offhand or secure its position with your thumb on the trigger hand. Verify that the firing pin selector
is in the safe position then depress the trigger and allow the hammer to slowly move forward.
At this time the secondary safety, the hammer block, is in the lower position and disabled.
As we
learned previously, when the trigger is released, the safety block is also released allowing the hammer to come
in contact with the breech face. As the firing pin selector is in the safe position, the firearm is now operating
with only one of the two independent safeties. Immediately after lowering the hammer, the secondary safety
must be activated by breaking the action open and then closing the action. When the action is broken, the
secondary hammer block safety is re-engaged.
It is imperative that the secondary hammer block safety be re-engaged immediately after any time the hammer
is manually lowered.
