Mixer Linking
Linking to another 664 or 552
The 664 features a Link I/O connection
on its right side panel, which allows the
664 to be interconnected with another
664 or a 552 mixer for applications
requiring more inputs.
The Link I/O connection may also be
used to link a 664 to a 442, 302, or
MixPre-D for applications requiring
higher input channel counts.
The Link I/O connector is an unbalanced
TA5M wired accordingly: pin 1=HP L,
pin 2=HP R, pin 3=Mix R, pin 4=Mix L,
and pin 5=link detection/ground.
When using the XL-TA55 cable to connect a 664 to another 664, it essentially
connects the Mix and HP bus of each mixer directly together through analog
switches. Each link becomes a “two-way street” so both mixer inputs appear on
both mixers HP and Mix outputs.
Combining two circuits in this way changes their impedances and therefore
gain/signal level. When the linked models are the same, the changes are iden
-
tical. Because the circuit characteristics of the 664 are different than the 552,
however, gain on the 552 must be adjusted to compensate.
When the 664 is linked with another 664 or a 552, all inputs appear at both
mixer’s outputs. The stereo mix from the other mixer is routed to the 664’s ste
-
reo master bus and recorded on tracks L and R. Return audio and PFL occur on
the headphone output of both mixers.
To link a 664 to another 664 or a 552 mixer:
1. Use the Sound Devices XL-TA55—a 12-inch, TA5F
to TA5F accessory cable, as shown—to connect
the Link I/O of the 664 to the Link I/O of the other
mixer. This will sent the stereo mix of each mixer
directly to the stereo output bus of both mixers.
2. Monitor the stereo sum of all input channels from either mixer headphone
