3 What is an ion?
An ion is an atom or a group of atoms carrying an electric charge. Ions with a positive elec-
tric charge are called cations, while those with a negative electric charge are called anions.
How do negative ions clean the air?
Most particles in the air have a positive charge or are positively ionized, while anions have a
negative charge. Due to the magnetic attraction, anions are attracted to particles with a posi-
tive electrical charge. When the concentration of anions in the air is sufficient, large amounts
of suspended particles will be attracted to the anions. In this way the particle becomes too
