Miscellaneous Setup Options

This  section  is  devoted  to  a  number  of  setup  options,  tools  and  diagnostic  facilities
that  have  not  yet  been  described  in  this  manual.  Mostly  these  facilities  reside  in  the

MISC 

menu;  others  can  be  found  under 

FILE/SETUP

in  the 

Desk  Setup

and 

Desk

Config

menus.

Serial Xfer

This  facility  resides  in  the 

FILE/SETUP

/

Data

menu,  and  is  used  for  the  transfer  of

files to/from the J Series Computer from/to a terminal or printer.

Select 

Serial Xfer

and the screen display will look similar to that shown opposite. The

option  is  provided  to 

Xfer

.  The  blue  box  above  the  selection  boxes

shows the state of the transfer process, or “

”.

By  selecting 

Settings

,  the  serial  port  parameters  for  Channel  A  and  B  (which

correspond  respectively  to  the  Bitpad  and  Remote  RS422  ports  on  the  J  Series
Computer’s connector panel) may be set up. Channel selection is made by stabbing on
the  toggling 

Channel  A/B

Options are provided here for all normal situations.

Xfer In

Having set the port parameters, select 

Xfer In 

to import a file. A QWERTY pop-up will

appear for the entry of the name of the file that you wish to import. You may leave the
menu  while  the  transfer  continues.  The  transfer  may  be  aborted  at  any  time  by
stabbing on

.

Selection  of 

Xfer  Out

will  produce  a  pop-up  list  of  files.  The  source  can  be  selected

from  the  System  Disk,  a  Floppy  disk  in  the  computer’s  floppy  drive  or  a  loaded
magneto-optical disc, by stabbing on the appropriate yellow box. 

Single files are shown in black, directories in red. Stab on a directory name to reveal its
sub-directories  or  files.  Stab  on  the  red  box  at  the  top  of  the  list  to  return  to  the  top
level. Stabbing on a file name will immediately start the transfer process. Files will be
exported in ASCII format. Progress will be shown in the blue (

Idle

) bar. You may leave

the  menu  while  the  transfer  continues.  The  transfer  may  be  aborted  at  any  time  by
