Setting Up a New Machine

If you are setting up the system for the first time, or need to get a hired-in machine on-
line, proceed as follows: 

First you must determine to which of the four ports the machine(s) that you need to
set up have been connected. Note that machines which are connected via the ‘DCTM’
parallel  interface  (see  below)  may  be  picked  up  by  any  ‘port’  on  the  Serial  Machine
Control display.

to call up the Serial Machine Control display.

Stab on the 

Machine 

box for that port and you will be presented with a list of machine

types whose control parameters are currently saved on the System Disk (see opposite).
If the machine you need is listed, select it by stabbing on that entry. If the machine is
not listed, stab outside the list to clear it and proceed to the next stage.

Stab  on  the  appropriate 

Interface 

box  and  the  Machine  Setup  Options  pop-up  will

appear  (see  lower  screen  opposite).  To  enter  a  new  machine  name,  stab  on 

Machine

Name

and type in a suitable name via the QWERTY pop-up. This can be carried out

with the pen or by using the dedicated keyboard. Press 

END 

or Enter to complete the

operation (see Section 1 for more details on using the QWERTY pop-up). Repeat the
process if you are setting up for more than one machine. 

Now stab on 

Interface Type

in the Machine Setup Options pop-up, and the following

list of protocols will appear:

achine’. A parallel interface which is the

equivalent  of  SSL’s  ‘S29’  (29-way  ‘D’  type  connector)  interface  as  used  on
SL4000/6000/8000 systems. The computer slaves to incoming timecode. Note that it is
only possible to have one DCTM machine on-line at a time. 

VPR3

–  Used  to  control  Timeline  Lynx  Modules  (with  the  VSI  option),  as  well  as

machines which can be directly controlled by this protocol.

Teac LV210

– Specifically designed for this Laserdisc player! 

Sony  9-Pin

–  Provides  direct  machine  control  of  VTRs,  ATRs,  as  well  as  ADAT  and

R-DAT  machines.  Indirect  control  of  ATRs,  VTRs  and  film  transports  may  also  be
effected via Motionworker and the Audio Kinetics ES 1.11 units.

Stab  on  the  protocol  you  require.  If  you  are  not  certain  of  which  protocol  to  use,
contact your local SSL office or distributor.
