SERVICE/REPAIR
RECOMMENDED BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS
1. Size: Group 31, 900-1200 CCA
2. Use battery with sealed top or with screw type flush fill caps. This will help prevent acid leakage should unit
be inadvertently laid flat or turned over.
3. Use battery with 3/8" threaded studs.
4. A high quality battery emits fewer gases as it recharges. Using a high quality battery will extend charger and
wiring life. Battery acid and petroleum resistant wiring is used in this unit. Battery fluid level must be checked
every 30 to 45 days.
BATTERY REPLACEMENT (HEAVY TRUCK HT1224)
See Figure 1
REMOVING OLD BATTERIES
1. Remove front top panel by removing (8) #10 Phillips screws securing panel. Remove bottom front panel by
removing 3 top and 3 bottom #10 Phillips screws (2 middle side Phillips are false screws -
DO NOT
try to
remove).
2. Disconnect batteries from cables. Label for easier reconnection. Move cables out of way.
3. Remove front and rear hold-down bars by removing (6) 1/4–20 bolts with 7/16" sockets or wrenches.
DO NOT
touch hold-down across battery terminals, arcing will occur.
4. Remove charger from unit by removing top (5) #10 Phillips screws (3 bottom Phillips are false screws -
DO NOT
try to remove). Slide panel and charger downward until upper part of charger is clear of unit.
5. Disconnect AC cord from transformer, noting position of three leads.
6. Disconnect negative (Black) cable lead from charger chassis.
7. Disconnect negative (Blue) volt gauge lead from charger chassis.
8. Disconnect positive (Red) amp gauge lead from charger circuit breaker.
9. Remove rear battery by lifting battery up, turning it and sliding it out rear opening of unit.
10. Remove front battery by lifting battery up, turning it and sliding it out rear opening of unit.
INSTALLING NEW BATTERIES
1. Slide in first battery through rear opening, turn battery so that battery vent faces front of unit, then set battery
on lowest platform of battery stand.
2. Slide second battery through rear opening, turn battery so that battery vent faces front of unit, then set
battery on upper platform of battery stand.
3. Connect positive (Red) amp gauge lead to charger circuit breaker.
4. Connect negative (Blue) volt gauge lead to charger chassis.
5. Connect negative (Black) cable lead to charger chassis.
6. Connect AC cord black and white leads to transformer and green lead to chassis ground.
7. Slide in and up plate with charger and secure with (5) #10 Phillips screws in top 5 holes. (If 3 bottom false
Phillips screws are gone, DO NOT replace using real screws in holes).
8. Install rear, then front hold-downs with (6) 1/4–20 bolts.
DO NOT
touch hold-downs across battery
terminals, arcing will occur.
9. Connect cables to batteries (see Figure 1).
10. Secure front top panel with (8) #10 Phillips screws. Secure bottom front panel with (6) #10 Phillips screws.
(If 2 middle side false Phillips screws are gone, DO NOT replace using real screws in holes.)
11. Charge unit.
