6: RAID Configuration

3ware-Based Hardware RAID (SATA)

1.

During the boot-up sequence, access the 3ware controller configuration screen by pressing

Alt-3

.

The system displays instructions to guide you.

2.

Follow the instructions to create the RAID partition of choice on each RAID controller.

3.

(Optional) Once the server is fully operational, install the 3ware 3DM™ management

software (available at http://www.3ware.com).

The 3ware storage management software allows administrators to perform RAID diagnostics and
performs automatic notification of drive failures.

Configuring Software RAID

Software RAID arrays are configured through the server operating system. To configure a RAID
array using software RAID, do the following:

1.

Follow the hardware RAID setup instructions above for the RAID card that is installed on
the server.

2.

Enter the RAID card BIOS screen and erase any RAID arrays that exist.

This should leave all drives in a JBOD state.

3.

Repeat for every RAID card in the server.

4.

After you remove all arrays, create new RAID arrays within the operating system.

Software RAID array management is performed using operating system level utilities.
