RAMDISK

Part of main memory can be used as a "RAMDISK" or "virtual floppy disk". Memory
used in this way is addressed like a

floppy disk

hard disk

ROM

Abbreviation for Read-Only Memory. The ROM is used to store system-specific data.
This data can be read but not modified.

Root

The root directory of a

is the very top directory from which you

can install others.

Screen

Screen size

The screen size is generally specified in inches ("). For example, 12" means that the
screen diagonal is 12" (1"=2.54 cm).

Self test

Each time your PC is switched on or reset, the functional integrity of the entire
hardware is checked. If the test proves negative this is indicated either audibly or
visually by means of an error message.

Serial interface

This

interface

permits serial data transfer between the PC and an expansion (e.g.

printer). In serial data transfer, all 8 bits of a byte are transferred consecutively on the
same data line.
