Using this dictionary
Each entry in the dictionary is organized hierarchically, by grammatical category, then
sense category. Grammatical categories are always in the same order. In the English-
French part of the dictionary, the rule is that if the word has a use as an irregular
inflected form, like the entry
left for example, this will come first. Next will come the
noun category, if there is one, then the adjective, then the adverb. Verbs, idioms, and
phrasal verbs come last, in that order. The way the entry
kindly is constructed is
shown in the diagram below. The section that follows gives other examples of how to
get the best out of the dictionary for various kinds of translation task.
As a general rule, all meanings of a word are to be found in one single entry, provided
they are pronounced in the same way, exclusive of stress shifts. English compounds
have their own place in the alphabetical order of the dictionary, treated as separate
entries.
The French-English entries follow a similar sequence, but adjectives precede nouns
and non-hyphenated compounds appear together in a separate category at the end
of the entry. French hyphenated compounds are given separate-entry status. On both
sides of the dictionary, the order of sense categories reflects frequency of use, the
most commonly used coming first. Within sense categories, distinctions between
alternative translations are shown by means of sense indicators in round brackets
and/or collocates giving typical context, which appear in square brackets.
