4.1 SAFETY IN THE USE OF THE EQUIPMENT
Before installing or operating this equipment, you must read this manual and
take into account the potential dangers to avoid them.
Although it has been designed for safety operation, any device may involve
potentially dangerous processes or procedures. The main potential risks
associated with this particular equipment are:
- Injury due to misuse
- Electrical discharge injuries
Potential danger is located more in measuring points where the electrodes
are installed than in the equipment itself, since the applications where they
are installed may be in contact with potentially dangerous substances. All
precautions must be taken and bear in mind potential hazards.
The equipment provided by JP SELECTA s.a.u. may involve the use of subs
-
tances that may be dangerous and it is essential that a person with authority
to be responsible for implementing COSHH regulations. The COSHH (1988)
regulation is about controlling hazardous substances for health.
COSHH regulations impose an obligation on employers to protect their emplo-
yees and other persons from substances used at work that may be dangerous
to health. The regulations require that all operations that can expose anyone
to solids, liquids, powders, vapours, gases or hazardous microorganisms have
to be evaluated. They are also required to introduce appropriate procedures
to handle these substances and retain the appropriate records.
Part of this policy is to ensure that Health and Safety Data Sheets are avai-
lable for all hazardous substances used in the laboratory. Anyone who uses
a dangerous substance should be informed of the following:
-
Physical data on substances
-
Any danger of fire or explosion
-
Any danger to health
-
Proper treatment of first aid
-
Any danger by reaction with other substances
-
How to clean and discard a spill
-
Appropriate protection measures
-
Proper storage and handling
Although this rule may not be applicable in your country, it is strongly recom-
mended that a similar approach will be adopted for protection of personnel
operating the equipment. Local regulations must also be considered.
