4.3. Intensity
Intensity controls the strength of the single impulse. Each patient senses the intensi-
ty individually due to tissue resistance, thickness of skin, and so on.
Therefore intensity should be set in a range, where impulses are felt as tingling and
tapping, but never as uncomfortable or even painful. Stimulation should not produce
muscle contractions.
These can be useful when pain is caused by cramped or spastic muscles. Under these
circumstances TENS may be used as a common muscle stimulator to release the
spasm fast. There it is recommended to set frequency high, pulse width long and
intensity to visible contraction (but still tolerable for the patient).
Usually 20 to 30 minutes of such muscle contraction releases the spasm.
Settings for intensity can be found in chapter 5.2.4.
4.4. Treatment duration
TENS devices are commonly used for longer periods of time, 20 – 30 minutes. For
some post-surgical treatments the duration may be prolonged to 36 hours. Pain reli-
ef may already occur at treatment begin. In some cases it may take up to 30 minutes
until pain relieve sets in, especially when point placement of electrodes is applied
or at lower frequency settings. Important is to continue pain therapy patiently and
consequently.
You may read about settings for treatment duration in chapter 5.2.5.
