10.3.1

Risk Assessment

If the springs are changed one at a time, there is no risk of collapse.  If a collapse did occur, medium

injuries could be suffered.

10.3.2

Control Measures

Ensure that all operators are familiar with the correct spring change procedure.

10.4

Crushing by Falling Palift or Load

Unstable loads may fall off the Palift on to the operator or other people.

10.4.1

Risk Assessment

If the load is placed centrally on the Palift and is compactly stacked, and if the Palift is located on a

solid and level floor, the risk is very low.  Injuries that may occur could be serious.

10.4.2

Control Measures

Ensure that loads are stable and stacked securely on the Palift.  Separate the Palift work area and

pedestrian areas.  Ensure the area around the Palift is clear of persons before operation.  Do not

exceed the load capacity of the Palift.  Ensure that the Palift is positioned on a level floor or use the

optional adjustable feet to level the Palift.  If the Palift incorporates a turntable top do not rotate the

load on the Palift rapidly.

10.5

Blow from Moving Palift

If the pallet is not unloaded properly from the Palift, it could spring up with some force and speed,

displacing the load or striking a person in close proximity.

10.5.1

Risk Assessment

There is a low risk of such a blow.  Removal of the load necessitates the use of a forklift, which, in

itself, protects the load from the force of the springs.  It also means that personnel are less likely to

be in very close proximity.  If suffered, injuries could be serious.

10.5.2

Control Measures

Ensure that operators and forklift drivers are aware of the correct procedure for the removal of a load

from the Palift, and that personal are trained to keep clear of a forklift in operation.

10.6

Descent Due to Spring Breaking

In the event that a spring does break the Palift may descend displacing the load or striking a person

in close proximity.

10.6.1

Risk Assessment

There is a low risk of such an occurrence.  The springs are designed to operate at relatively low

stress levels, and if maintained should not break.  If a spring does break it will be under stress which

occurs when the Palift is loaded, therefore the descent would be over a short distance with little

chance of becoming caught under the load or displacing the load.  If suffered, injuries could be

serious.
