DHD-1 Digital Hand Dynamometer – Grip Strength Testing Protocol
Step 1: Select the Handle Position
Set the adjustable handle to the desired position (normally position #2).
Make sure the handle clip is located at the lower post (furthest from the
gauge) and is locked securely around the post. Failure to position the
handle correctly will cause inaccurate readings.
Step 2: Placing the DHD-1 in the Patient’s Hand
While supporting the base to prevent accidental dropping, place the
DHD-1 in the patient’s hand with the safety strap around their wrist as
shown below.
Always Use
the Safety Strap
Step 3: Preparing the Patient for Testing
With the patient sitting erect, have the patient arrange the device so it
fi
ts
comfortably in their hand. The shoulder should be adducted and neutrally
rotated, and the elbow should be flexed at a 90° angle. The forearm
and wrist should be in a neutral position. Grip force should be applied
smoothly, without rapid wrenching or jerking motion. Wrist extension
from 0 to 30° is permissible as maximal grip is achieved. Wrist extension
exceeding 30° should be noted in the chart.
