Polarizing Filter

In a polarizing filter, the arrangement of the
molecules allows (for example) the up-down
component to pass through, but not the left-right
component.

Think of a rope passing through a picket fence
(with vertical slits).

If you vibrate the rope in a horizontal direction,
the fence will block the vibrations.

If you vibrate the rope in a vertical direction, the
vibrations in the rope will pass thought the gaps
in the fence.
